In this engaging and thought-provoking video British author and former professor of education Sir Ken Robinson argues for a thorough re-thinking of public education. He claims that the current embattled system is based on outdated assumptions dating back to its Enlightenment origins and therefore stifles creativity and individuality. Along the way he makes some controversial assertions regarding the reality of ADHD as a medical condition and the use of medication to treat it, as well as making an unsubstantiated suggestion of a correlation between the rise of standardized testing and the increase in ADHD diagnoses. His message is undoubtedly appealing – reinvent and implement a system of public education that fosters divergent thinking and collaborative learning, and celebrates the strengths of individuals. Few would argue with these goals, but I’m still waiting to hear what practical solutions Robinson proposes.
